Frequently Asked Questions

In this sections we will try to asnwer the most frequent questions

How does CARCAT work? (Ultrasound)

CARCAT is a leading ultrasound rat / rodent repellent made specifically for cars. It uses advanced automatic frequency pattern banding technology which ensures that rats do not get immune to the ultrasound.
Ultrasound is a spectrum of sound which starts just beyond the human hearing range (20Hz to 20kHz). Certain animals like Rats / bats / dolphins have the ability to detect ultrasound with varying frequency ranges. The rats / rodents are mainly nocturnal and their night vision isn’t as good. They rely on ultrasound for communication (distress signaling / mating calls) and to a certain extent echo location. CARCAT bombards ultrasound waves with unique patterns which disturb and disorient the rat / rodent. The ultrasound intensity is much more intense and deafening than the rat / rodent can tolerate. To add to its woes these wave patterns interfere with the echo location and cuts out incoming ultrasound signatures of its natural predators like snakes and cats and also other rats and rodents. They are also very territorial creatures and will attack and kill another trespassing rat / rodent. Ultrasound is its sixth sense and blocking that makes it very insecure of its environment.
If CARCAT installed as per the installation manual the rats / rodents should stop visiting within a week. Rats / rodents are stubbornly territorial and they will resist relocating as long as possible and it is as per the individual rat / rodent’s tolerance limits against CARCAT’s ultrasound bombardment. Tests and customer feedback have shown they leave within a week.

For existing infestation there might be an initial resistance by the rat / rodent to relocate. (Read above question / answer)

  • It is advised that the car engine bay area be thoroughly cleaned and washed at the garage making sure rat feces and urine traces are removed as far as possible. Rats / rodent like most animals mark and identify their territory with their urine.
  • Keep checking the engine bay area for feces / urine traces for a few days post installation and clean it immediately. The rat / rodent may not be able to stay too long in the presence of ultrasound bombardment but will try and mark its territory.
  • For really heavy infestation tobacco pouches can be put at the time of installation for a more immediate two pronged effects and force the rat / rodent to relocate or find another shelter.
  • Park the vehicle at a different location for a few days.
CARCAT repels rats / rodents by bombarding ultrasound. It is a very unbearable sound level for them. They may visit or use to escape a prey but will not be able to stay for too long to cause any damage.

Installation

CARCAT is intended to be installed in the engine bay (cavity).
Note: CARCAT needs to be installed firmly (eg. to the engine cavity wall) using the screws provided.
Caution: Using cable ties or double sided tape will drastically reduce the effectiveness. Strong ultrasonic wave fronts are created when unit is installed securely to a firm base, thus providing a hostile environment for rats.
Yes. It does matter whether your car is front or rear engine, as long as installation is in accordance to as mentioned in the installation manual.
For cars having engines at the bottom (eg Maruti Ecco) installation should be such that dirt does not accumulate on the front grill of CARCAT.
Note: For best results always ensure unit is facing hard metallic / plastic surfaces of which ultrasound waves can reflect (echo). More reflections (echoes) imply more auditory distress to the rat / rodent.
CARCAT has been thoroughly tested on all segments of cars from small cars to SUV’s. As such it can be used in vehicles having a 12 to 24VDC electrical system (battery) and an enclosed engine bay area. As long as ultrasound waves can reflect and are not lost into the open it should work. We give no guarantee it will be effective. Try at own risk.
Caution: CARCAT is intended to be used only with cars. Installing CARCAT in any other vehicle is at users risk and may render the warranty void.

CARCAT is easy to install. A seasoned mechanic should be able to do it in 10-15 minutes.
Note: - Due care should be taken for choosing the place of installation beforehand for maximizing the effectiveness of CARCAT. CARCAT needs to be installed firmly (eg. to the engine cavity wall) using the screws provided.
Caution: Using cable ties or double sided tape will drastically reduce the effectiveness. Strong ultrasonic wave fronts are created when unit is installed securely to a firm base, thus providing a hostile environment for rats.
Note: For high end cars or cars still under warranty it is advised to get CARCAT installed at the car’s authorized service center.
Yes. CARCAT comes with screws, fuse and cable ties. All you need is a mechanic to fit it and get it running.

Wiring (to battery terminals)

It is recommended CARCAT loop connectors be directly connected to the battery terminals.
For cars wherein battery is not in the engine bay, connect to live terminals that come to the engine bay area.
Note: For high end cars or cars still under warranty it is advised to get CARCAT installed at the car’s authorized service center.
Caution: CARCAT needs to be always powered ‘ON’. Connecting to terminals which give power only when the car is running will render CARCAT useless.

Troubleshooting

The following indicates CARCAT is functioning properly-

  • LED blinks (flashes) around every second
  • Faint but audible BEEPs every 30 seconds

Note: For high end cars or cars still under warranty it is advised to get CARCAT installed at the car’s authorized service center.
The BEEPs may not be audible in a noisy surrounding. Try a quieter location, else unit needs replacement.
If u can hear the audible BEEP, the unit is functionally working and it will still repel rats. If the unit is still under warranty period, you can avail a free replacement.

Get following checked by a car mechanic-

  • 1.Fuse
  • Loose connection of connectors
  • 3.Disconnect the (+) connector and reconnect after one minute

Still not working? Unit needs to be replaced.

Safety

Yes. CARCAT is harmless and inaudible to humans. The ultrasound sound pressure level (SPL) <100dB for CARCAT is much less than the prescribed safety limit or threshold level Values (TLVs) for airborne (non-contact) ultrasound as laid down by

  • American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)
  • International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Bureau of Radiation and Medical Devices, Canada and many others

Also ultrasound SPL is almost negligible outside the engine cavity or passenger cabin area.
Yes. CARCAT is harmless to pets. Though some pets may be able to hear the lower ranges of ultrasound frequency, they will not be disturbed or harmed inside the passenger cabin. In fact the ultrasound sound pressure level (SPL) produced by CARCAT will not even harm the rats / rodents only cause auditory distress.

Battery consumption

CARCAT consumes less than 0.7 watts which is much less power than the other always ‘ON’ gadgets like security system, etc. consume. Car batteries use lead acid chemistry which does not have a very long standby time even if they are disconnected, because they self-discharge at a typical rate of 4% to 10% depending on the make, age and use of battery.
A typical 35AH small car battery should work for at least a month considering a 4% discharge rate and assuming full charge.
Yes. CARCAT works on your car battery. Similar to a car security system, it cannot protect against rats / rodents if it is not powered.

Humane, Green

No. CARCAT / ultrasound does not kill or harm the rat / rodent. It gives auditory distress which makes your car engine bay less favorable for the rat / rodent to reside or visit.
